Having an IP68 rated case sounds good and is often marketed as the ultimate in device protection, but what does IP68 actually mean? Here at JLC Distribution, we like our customer to know exactly what they are buying, so we’re here to give an explanation…
IP stands for Ingress Protection and is the internationally recognised standard introduced by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to define how resistant a product is to fresh water and raw materials such as dust, dirt and sand.
The first digit after IP determines how resistant a product is to solids and, based on the IEC scale, 6 means that there is “Protection from contact with harmful dust” and during testing, no harmful dust or dirt penetrated the unit over an eight hour period.
The next digit is the resistance to water rating and an 8-rating means “Protected from immersion in fresh water with a depth of up to 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes”
So, in summary, IP68 products are backed by an internationally recognised standard and are deemed to be water resistant in fresh water to a maximum depth of 1.5 metres, for up to 30 minutes and are protected from non-harmful dust.
